Starting rideshare work? Review coverage before turning on the app

Ask how insurance applies while waiting, accepting a ride, and carrying a passenger before using your personal car for rideshare work.

Key takeaways

Tell your insurer about paid driving before starting.

Compare app-off, waiting, and active-trip coverage.

Ask separately about damage to your own car.

Describe the work accurately

Tell the agent which passenger platform you plan to use, who owns the car, and whether you also do deliveries. California's insurance department warns that standard personal policies can exclude driving for hire. A platform's acceptance of your insurance card is not confirmation that your personal policy covers this activity. Request a review before your first shift.

Make a coverage timeline

Write down three situations: the app is off, you are logged in waiting, and you have accepted a trip or are carrying a passenger. Ask which policy responds in each situation. Liability protection does not by itself answer whether your own injuries or vehicle damage are covered. Review the platform's current insurance documents rather than relying on another driver's experience.

Keep written answers with the policy

Bring your declarations page and the platform documents to Cardona's. Ask whether an endorsement or different policy is available for the exact work described. Record deductibles, exclusions, and effective dates. If you switch platforms or start carrying deliveries as well, request another review. Passenger rideshare and food delivery should not be assumed to have identical insurance arrangements.

  • Platform names and type of work
  • Vehicle ownership and regular drivers
  • Coverage and deductible for each phase of work

Common questions

Does the app's insurance replace my own policy?

Do not assume that. Compare both policies and the periods when each applies.

Can I use the same answer for delivery work?

No. Describe delivery work separately and have the insurer review it specifically.
